"Captain Joe" Stewart
September 3, 1939 -
November 19, 2009
|
Age 70 years old, of Helena, MS, entered eternal life on Thursday, November 19, 2009, in Pascagoula’s Singing River Hospital. He was born in Pearl River County, MS on September 3, 1939, to the late Toxie and Ethel Stewart.
“Captain Joe” was a Helena resident for the past 40-years, was a charter member of the Woodlawn Baptist Church in Pascagoula, and a Veteran of the United States Army. He worked as a barber before finding his true calling on the waters of his beloved Gulf Coast, and retired after 35-years of being a tug boat captain. He was an avid outdoorsman from his early youth and never lost that passion.
“Captain Joe” was a man that was larger than life, in both stature and personality. His love of music was only matched by his love of family. If you ever had the privilege and honor to meet him, you knew you had found a friend; for he truly never met a stranger.
He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 48-years, Earline Yvonne Stewart, of Helena. His legacy will live on through his six sons, Ronnie Stewart and his wife Lisa, of Hurley; Joe Stewart and his wife Lisa, of Escatawpa; David Stewart and his wife Robin, of Pascagoula; James Stewart, of Helena; Michael Stewart and his wife Ida, of Lucedale; and Tony Stewart and his wife Tammy, of Grand Bay, AL. Two sisters, Shirley Flemings and her husband John; and Gayle Garrett and her husband Wayne. Eleven grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, November 23, 2009, at 1:00 pm, in the Chapel of Coastal Funeral Home, with Bro. Mickey Middleton, Pastor of the Promised Land Assembly of God in Lucedale officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Serene Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made at the Hancock Bank to the Joseph F. Stewart fund. |
